Three Hidden Signs of Monsoon Damage on Your Roof

You made it through last week’s storm, took a quick look at your roof from the driveway, and didn’t see anything missing. Relief, right?

Not so fast.

Most serious storm damage isn’t visible from the ground. High winds lift flashing, and small hail strikes create microscopic cracks that slowly seep water into your home. By the time you actually see a stain on your ceiling, the damage has been brewing for weeks.

Here are three subtle signs your roof took a hit, even if everything looks fine from below.

Sign 1: “Gravel” in Your Gutters

After a storm, take a look inside your downspouts and gutter trays. Do you see a heavy buildup of dark, sand-like particles? Those are shingle granules, and they are your roof’s primary shield against the elements.

The Danger: Hail impacts knock these granules loose, stripping away the protective barrier.
The Result: Even if your roof isn’t leaking today, bare shingles undergo rapid UV deterioration and absorb water, leading to full failure in just a few weeks.

Rule of Thumb: If your gutters look like they’re filled with a fresh layer of gravel, the storm hit harder than you think.

Sign 2: Cracked or Separated Flashing

Flashing is the protective metal strip installed around high-risk areas like chimneys, skylights, and vent pipes. It’s held in place with water-tight sealant.

Strong winds can shift these metal plates, and hail can easily crack aging caulk. Grab a pair of binoculars and inspect your roofline safely from the ground:

Do you see gaps where the caulk used to be?
Is there visible space between the metal flashing and the shingle?

If you answered yes, rain is already finding its way beneath your roofline. You might not see an interior leak yet, but it’s only a matter of time.

Sign 3: Lifting or Creased Shingles

A completely missing shingle is easy to spot, but partially damaged shingles are far more common and easily overlooked from the ground.

When high winds catch a shingle, they lift it up, break the thermal seal underneath, and leave a permanent crease across the top. Even if the shingle lays back down flat afterward, the seal is broken. Water will wind its way under the roof deck, soak your insulation, and eventually rot your rafters.
